In Diablo II: Resurrected’s Reign of the Warlock expansion, the Colossal Ancients serve as the ultimate pinnacle endgame encounter. These massively empowered Uber versions of Act 5’s guardians—Talic the Defender (Fire), Korlic the Protector (Cold), and Madawc the Guardian (Lightning)—push even the strongest optimized builds to their absolute limits. Madawc, the D2R Ladder Items ranged lightning specialist, excels at area control and punishing stationary or minion-heavy setups with his throwing attacks and escalating storms. This guide details unlocking the fight, mastering Madawc’s mechanics, and securing victory with optimal strategies.

Unlocking the Colossal Ancients

Collect the five Colossal Ancient Statues by defeating Terrorized Act bosses in Hell difficulty. Worldstone Shards—rare drops from enemies in Terror Zones—allow you to force an entire Act into Terrorized status for the duration of your game, with Terror Zones now rotating every 30 minutes:

Talic’s Anguish – Andariel (Act 1)

Korlic’s Pain – Duriel (Act 2)

Madawc’s Ire – Mephisto (Act 3)

Bul-Kathos’ Nightmare – Diablo (Act 4)

Worusk’s End – Baal (Act 5)

Transmute all five statues in the Horadric Cube while in Act 5 Hell to open the portal to the Colossal Summit. Activate the Altar of the Heavens to begin the simultaneous battle against all three. Each Ancient has roughly 6.7–6.8 million HP, high defense, and powerful enrage mechanics.

Madawc the Guardian: Abilities and Phases

Madawc is immune to Lightning and deals heavy lightning damage. All three Ancients open the fight by casting Enchant to boost their elemental output, while Madawc projects a Conviction Aura that slashes player lightning resistance by 100%. His signature attacks are rapid Double Throw and throwing axe barrages, keeping pressure at range.

The encounter escalates through phases:

Initial Phase: Standard ranged attacks plus up to five Extra Fast Protector Spirit minions that also use Double Throw and inherit lightning immunity.

Second Stage (after first Ancient dies or at ~50%/25% HP): Ranged hits now spawn Charged Bolts from the impact point, creating chaotic spreads that devastate minion builds or groups in multiplayer.

Final Stage (after second Ancient falls): Madawc summons Colossal Thunder Storm, calling down powerful lightning strikes across the arena that punish players without summons to soak damage. Enrages further increase his attack speed and bolt frequency.

Strategy for Defeating Madawc

Many players target Madawc last or first depending on loot priorities and team composition. Lightning resistance must be heavily overcapped (target 200%+ effective after Conviction) using gear like Griffon’s Eye, Thunderstroke, or absorb items. Cannot Be Frozen and high mobility help dodge his barrages.

Leverage the arena’s pillars for line-of-sight breaks against his throws. Clear minions aggressively, as they multiply the bolt chaos. Builds like Lightning Javazon, Nova Sorceress, or Hammerdin excel here, with an Infinity-runed mercenary for resistance breaking on the others. Life leech or Life Tap sustains melee fighters during close engagements. Coordinate kill order carefully: removing Talic or Korlic first reduces overlapping elemental fields, but saving Madawc for last secures his specific jewels.

Positioning and movement are critical—never stand still during the final Thunder Storm phase. Pre-buff fully with resistances, Battle Orders, and summons to absorb lightning strikes. The fight rewards precise execution over pure DPS.

Rewards and Why It Matters

Defeating the Colossal Ancients drops one of two exclusive Unique Jewels from Madawc (Level 75 required; only one Colossal Jewel equippable at a time, similar to Gheed’s Fortune):
