Spell Totem in Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5 isn't just a lazy casting setup. It's a mana build first, and a totem build second. Once you start treating mana as both your weapon and your armour, the whole thing clicks. That's why smart passive choices and well-rolled PoE 2 Items matter so much here, because every extra chunk of maximum mana pushes damage higher while making Mind Over Matter feel far less fragile.
Why mana does the heavy lifting
The main damage trick comes from Archmage. Instead of chasing only spell damage or cast speed, you stack unreserved maximum mana and let Archmage turn that pool into added spell damage. With Spell Totem linked in, your character isn't standing still and firing spells by hand. You drop totems, move, curse, recover, and let the totems do the ugly work. Around 5,000 mana with roughly 1,400 life may look odd at first, but it's exactly the point. The life pool is small because the mana pool is doing most of the serious work.

Mana Drain is also useful when things get messy. It's not glamorous, but it gives you another way to stabilise instead of just hoping your regen catches up. Enfeeble fits naturally too, since reducing enemy pressure gives your mana buffer more room to breathe.
How the gearing usually develops
Early on, players often make the mistake of grabbing random spell damage and calling it good. That'll work for a while, but it falls off. The stronger route is flat mana, maximum mana increases, resistances, Spirit where needed, and useful skill levels on jewellery. Boots with movement speed, energy shield, and mana feel great because this build hates being pinned down. Amulets can be huge if they add spell levels and improve how much damage is taken from mana before life. Capped elemental resistance is still required, and chaos resistance shouldn't be ignored once maps start getting nastier.
Playing it in higher maps
In Tier 6 Waystone maps and above, the build rewards calm play. Place totems ahead of you, move before enemies surround you, and don't waste mana by spamming when one placement will clear the pack. The setup can hit hard and stay alive, but it isn't brainless. Good pathing, curse timing, and clean PoE 2 gear choices are what make the difference between a build that barely functions and one that cuts through dense endgame maps without feeling shaky.
